Castells

The castells (meaning castle in Catalan) are human towers traditionally built at festivals all around Catalonia. The collies (the teams building the castells) have the objective of building and dismantling the tower, which in some cases can reach up to 10 levels high. The castells represent a practice that symbolizes a spirit of togetherness and are constructed by people of all ages and backgrounds. In 2010, the castells were declared Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
