Fado

Fado is a traditional Portuguese music genre born in the streets of Lisbon in the 1800's as a result of the mixing of the Moors and the seafarers. The word "fado" originates from the latin word "fatum" which means "fate". Usually sung by one single vocalist and accompanied by classical Portuguese guitars, fado is imbued with contrasting emotions such as humor, melancholy, loss, heartbreak, tragedy, longing and hope. In 2011, fado was added to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
